I am just going to dive right in and say it: you need to stop setting goals.
Yes, that’s right.
You need to stop all that “goal setting” mumbo-jumbo.
Because it is actually not helping you at all.
And yes, I am a coach.
Isn’t that what coaches do? Get you to set goals and help you achieve them?
Well yes, that is part of what we are taught.
But life is the ultimate teacher and this is what I have learnt:
When we are feeling stuck, we often don’t really know what it is that we actually want.
We just know we don’t want to be where we are, feeling what we are feeling.
So to get us to set goals at that stage, will just add more stress, which is definitely not what we need.
It will add more pressure.
- What goals should I set?
- What do I want?
- How can I not know what I want?
- It’s ridiculous that I still don’t know what I want!
- and so on…
(enter the mind monkeys, and off they go, having a party in our head)
You see, when we set goals we are sending ourselves the message that our worth comes from our achievements.
Subconsciously we will believe that we are only worthwhile if we achieve something or have something.
And I have told you about how powerful our subconscious mind is.
It accounts for over 90% of our brain function.
But your worth does NOT depend on what you achieve.
Your worth just is.
So now what?
Well, now you start by letting go of this idea that you need to have goals.
Because once you do that, you will allow yourself to connect with who you truly are.
You let go of that pressure.
And your authentic self can express itself.
That quiet voice, that usually gets drowned by the louder and very unhelpful one (aka the mind monkeys).
I know my best ideas never come to me when I am sitting in front of my laptop wanting to do this or that.
My best ideas come to me when I am outside, walking or sitting somewhere looking at a beautiful landscape.
When I am connected to myself and feeling relaxed.
So today I am letting you off the hook and telling you to stop setting goals.
Just like that.
Take the pressure off and see what happens.
Because when your mind is quieter, you can let your inner voice express itself.
Start listening to it.
But how can you do that?
I know that it’s quite easy to say and not necessarily so easy to do.
It might be that you have a huge block in your way and whilst you are reading this you are nodding away but also thinking ‘hey ho, that’s nice to know, but I won’t be able to bring that into my world…“
